A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
