An defense official has stated that the MoD is actively looking into the potential security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and staff have been advised to refrain from talking about classified information in any cars.
Security Advice for MoD Personnel
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about classified information while riding in China-made cars.
The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any vehicle, because of the increasing threats of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Security Background
This revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This wider defence situation underscores the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in every areas of official operations, from vehicle usage to communication practices.
