The McLaren driver narrowly beat team-mate and championship contender the Australian for the top spot in the closing stages of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who took the points lead from Piastri by a single point after his victory in Mexico City two weeks ago, beat the Melbourne-born driver by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Before then, Oscar Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver throughout the hour before the sprint shootout due at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the other racer in realistic title contention, trailing 36 points behind Norris, ended up in P17 as his Red Bull team followed a unique setup. His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to go off, albeit lightly, when he lost control at the fourth corner early in the session. Tsunoda lost control over the exit kerbs before sliding over the escape zone, and was lucky to avoid just a light touch of the barrier. Ferrari's the seven-time champion also lost it, at the very end of the practice, rotating twice through the high-speed corner leading to the last turn on to the main straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in P19, one place behind teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren drivers were well clear of the other competitors, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber P3, 0.619 seconds behind the Australian's time. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was in fourth, with the Sauber of Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
